Deliverables: Exhibition identities | Signage | Environmental graphics | Promotional + interpretive materials

The Brief

The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) presents photography, film, and video exhibitions for a broad public audience. With exhibitions varying widely in subject matter and audience, the museum needed distinct visual identities that could capture the character of each show and extend across exhibition and promotional materials.

This included a series of juried exhibitions showcasing work by K–12 students from San Diego County and Tijuana, Mexico, which called for an engaging and accessible approach for young artists, their communities, and the museum’s broader audience.

My Direction

I looked to the artwork and themes of each exhibition to establish its visual direction, using typography, imagery, color, and graphic elements to complement the work. I then carried the show’s identity through exhibition signage, environmental graphics, interpretive materials, and promotion.

MOPA’s culturally and linguistically diverse audience was also an important consideration, particularly for exhibitions involving students and communities across the San Diego–Tijuana region.

The Result

  • Distinctive Presence: Each exhibition had its own character and visual energy, helping create a fresh experience for returning museum visitors.

  • Cohesive Exhibition Experience: Graphics, signage, and supporting materials worked together from promotion through the physical exhibition environment.

  • Broad Audience Appeal: Clear, accessible communications helped the exhibitions connect with MOPA's diverse audiences while supporting the museum's larger commitment to public engagement.
